Safety, Leadership and Profitability
The Corporate Mission Statement should address "Safety, Health and Security". The mission statement should be at the forefront of all company communications and conspicuously posted to inform employees, clients, suppliers and the general public that safety is a core company value. The Corporate Mission Statement should be included as a safety training discussion topic.
Integrate Safety - Safety needs to be incorporated into everyone's job responsibilities. Don't wait to have a safety meeting to "discuss safety". Start off any meeting, tail gate session, employee gathering or conference call with a safety message. Designate someone to prepare a short safety message at the start of every meeting.
Don't wait for a "driver meeting" to "discuss safety". Managers and supervisors should receive regular safety training. Safety goals and objectives should be part of all company planning and forecasting activities. Every company employee is to be held accountable for working safely and following company safety policy while the company is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment.

Hiring and Retention
Regulatory compliance, hiring and retaining qualified drivers are two of the most critical issues facing the transportation industry. What would it mean in terms of increased profit if your company found a way to reduce driver turnover while lowering collision frequency, maintenance and insurance costs?
Improving safety is the key to increased profitability. But if company policies and procedures are not in writing, safety's effect on profitability cannot be measured, or managed. Start by downloading Thorn Valley's sample Company Safety Policy and best practices for Driver Hiring and Retention (included with TVE's Fleet Safety and Crash Countermeasure guide).
Train for both compliance - and results!
Document all training dates, topics and attendees. Use an orientation and training checklist to ensure all mandatory topics are covered. Verify understanding and retention upon completion of training by asking employee to explain what they have learned or by administering a brief quiz before filing records away.
Hiring Driver Training School Graduates
In today’s business climate, finding drivers can become increasingly difficult. As a consequence, some companies have chosen to accept driver trainees or graduates from truck driving schools. Thorn Valley, as a general rule, does not recommend following this course of action. For those companies that do hire driver trainees, TVE offers the following Program Evaluation Criteria.
